Living Green in Morris County New Jersey

I will start this blog post off by saying I am not a expert on living green.  I do have some ideas which many of my neighbors here in Convent Station seem to be overlooking.  I walk around my neighborhood and see all kinds of things happening and wonder why people are being so wasteful.

Most of my neighbors have lawn services coming in and taking care of their lawns.  On top of paying a few hundred dollars a month to have these people come in and actually cut the their lawns,  these people doing the cutting of the lawns are bagging up the lawn clippings and haling then away.  Are the clippings being composted? I don’t know, but I do know that all the nutrients that these very nice yards need are being slowly carted away and because of that these yards need much more in the way of fertilizers.  There is a large cost to the environment to produce all these fertilizers to put on these yards.

It would be so much better for the environment if these people would cut their own lawns and blow the clippings back onto their yards as they cut them.  The yards would need less fertilizer, and less watering as well.  We would have fewer of the large gas guzzling trucks pulling trailers around our neighborhoods full of lawn care equipment, we likely would have lots less organic material going into our landfills, and even better yet, my neighbors here in Convent Station would be getting a little exercise which they are paying themselves for through not paying for a lawn service.

Don’t get me wrong, I am not against my Convent Station neighbors using a lawn service, but at a minimum find out what is happening to the lawn clippings?
